Kahuzi Biega National Park
Located in the Eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kahuzi Biega National Park is another draw in the DR Congo.
Its name was derived from the two extinct volcanoes ‘Kahuzi and Biega”. Lieing within the Mitumba range, Mountain Kahuzi stands at 3308 m and Biega at 2790 m.
The Mitumba range is close to Lake Kivu a lake that is shared by DR Congo and Rwanda. This range stretches along the Albertine rift and is bordered by Rwenzori Mountains and Bukavu town to the west and Rwanda to the south.
Its pretty ecosystem consists of grasslands, dry savannah, rainforests, swamps, alpine vegetation, and bamboo forests which shelters a wide range of Wildlife including 349 bird species, 1178 species of plants and 136 mammals.
Kahuzi Biega National Park is known most for Eastern Lowland Gorillas, but it is home to the other Species like Buffaloes, African elephants, Antelopes, primates like Golden monkeys, Baboons and different birds.
If you want to get to Kahuzi Biega National Park, the better way is to land in Rwanda at Kigali airport. Transfer from the airport by Car up to Rusizi border.
The drive takes about 6-7 hours. From this border you cross to DR Congo for your further journey up to the Park.
